Blog This (Tenderness and Terror: Clean Romantic Suspense Series Book 1) by Cami Checketts

 photo 23270667_zpsbbsujplw.jpg

Synopsis: Will protecting children throughout the world cost Natasha her own family?

Devastated by the loss of her brother, Natasha Senecot works to expose the dangers of Matthew Chrysler’s violent video games, succeeding in bankrupting and humiliating him.

Chrysler retaliates and sends a hit man after her. Natasha is forced to fake her own death to protect her children, but after witnessing another tragedy, Natasha won’t hide any longer.

In a race against time, can Natasha expose Matthew Chrysler before his assassin murders her family and shatters her world?

Thoughts: I LOVED this book! It grabbed me on the first page, and I didn't want to put it down till I got to the end. It was an emotional rollercoaster of the best kind.

While I didn't agree with some of Natasha's actions, the author was very adept at making me understand the thought process behind them. The author also manages to keep us guessing as to just how all the different threads that make up the story are going to play out--and none of the outcomes disappoint!

If you enjoy a blend of suspense, romance and humor, this is definitely the book for you.

We've Always Got New York (What Happens To Men #2) by Jill Knapp

 photo 25129101_zpsz1v7mggo.jpg

Synopsis: The second book in Jill Knapp’s fabulous series about dating in New York picks up after Amalia Hastings returns to Manhattan from her trip to Brazil – and finds that life has indeed gone on without her.
Fresh off the plane, Amalia’s feeling anxious and unresolved; left alone to pick up the pieces and deal with the repercussions of choosing her own path over Michael.
Without an apartment, without a job, and starting to wonder if she’s even without a best friend, she finds herself holding on tightly to the one thing she is familiar with, New York City.
Sometimes you have to let go of who you were to become who you will be…
Thoughts: What a fabulous follow-up to What Happens To Men When They Move To Manhattan?! It was great to catch up with Amalia, Olivia, Cassandra, and the rest of the gang from that book as they started another year of graduate school. Once I started reading, I hated every time I had to tear myself away to do something else. I wanted to know what was going to happen next--and there was plenty going on, yet again! Romances, break ups, surprises, important decisions, ultimatums...all that and more in 225 pages. I also enjoyed that we get to experience two different perspectives, with Olivia and Amalia alternating chapters.

The book ends with a cliffhanger, so now I'm waiting anxiously for book 3 to find out where they all go from here.

Book Tour: Booker:Tap That (Booker #2), by John Mefford

NEW RELEASE....
A performance for the ages.

Courtney Johnson brings the house down in the heart of the vibrant Dallas Arts District. Later, shrill screams pierce the hallways of Wyle Theater when Courtney, a budding Broadway musical star, is found dead, a single bullet to the head.

Driven to find the killer before panic tears apart the arts community and all those who support it, private investigator Booker T. Adams discovers evidence of a professional hit, then uncovers a lovers triangle that takes him all the way to the mean streets of Boston.

And then it happens again. Another performer killed, someone Booker had met. Rocked by the shocking murders, performers and patrons alike fear that a serial killer is on the loose, and no one knows when and or where another dead body will show up.

But professional obligations quickly morph into personal vendettas. Running against an unforgiving clock, Booker is forced to solicit the help of a crime boss, The Shark.

With his life threatened at almost every turn, and his heart being put through a meat grinder, Booker taps into every resource at his disposal to stop more than just a killer.

But at what price?

Full of unforgettable characters, bone-chilling suspense and stunning thrills, BOOKER - Tap That is a wild ride that will test even the most fervent reader's quest for a luminous reading experience.

My review: This book picks up shortly after the end of the first in the series (see below), but it is not necessary to have read the first to enjoy the second.

Booker has opened a PI office above his friend's bar and has hired an assistant who just happens to be one of the barmaids. He is romantically involved with a society girl--whose fiancee was murdered in the first book.  This relationship gives him the opportunity to investigate a series of deaths in the arts community while still trying to bring down the dirty cops who got him removed from the police force.

I enjoyed this book just as much as the first and still find a lot of similarities between Booker and James Patterson's Alex Cross. There is action, intrigue, humor, romance, and lots of surprises all in one book. Highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys mysteries/thrillers/action.

I received this book to review through Beck Valley Books Book Tours. All the opinions above are 100% my own.

Booker: Streets of Mayhem (Booker #1)
On a cool October afternoon, the majestic blue sky above Dallas is polluted with swells of gray smoke, carrying shattered memories of fifteen people, mostly children, who've just been killed by an explosion on a bus.

A white supremacist group claims responsibility, opening old wounds, turning neighbor against neighbor--fracturing the community. A Southeast Dallas native, Booker T. Adams couldn't be more invested in the city…in the people he'd served for the last seven years as a beat cop for the Dallas Police Department. Without warning, it becomes personal for Booker on so many levels. And as panic grips the city, he must decide how much he's willing to sacrifice to end the chaos.

With his career called into question and his family in the crosshairs of one terrorist act after another, Booker invests every fiber of his being to protect a broken community and to stop the brutal, senseless slayings.

If he fails, terrorism will reign in the city of Dallas.

About the Book

CROSSROADS

a Miller's Creek novel and Christian contemporary romance

 photo 3D-Crossroads-white-background-smaller-254x300_zpsn2jaqvmw.jpg
A former soldier battles for the soul of a prodigal...

After a devastating divorce, a bitter single mom and atheist starts her own real estate company in the nostalgic and picturesque town of Miller’s Creek, Texas. Then her young daughter’s disturbing symptoms lead doctors to discover that her leukemia has relapsed. With her new life now turned upside down, Mara Hedwig struggles to keep her business afloat. And her daughter’s worsening condition forces her to rethink her beliefs about Carter Callahan and his God. Will Mara make the return to Christian faith in the face of life’s greatest challenge?
An ex-military operative struggles with the return to civilian life while coping with his rebellious teen-aged daughter. During a house-search, Carter meets Mara, a headstrong Realtor who wants nothing to do with his God. But when Mara’s little girl is diagnosed with leukemia, the clock begins ticking for him to convince Mara to return to a life of faith. Just as he seems to be making headway, circumstances beyond his control throw his efforts into a tailspin. Can Carter learn to rest in the sovereignty of God?
(You can also snag a free digital copy of TEXAS ROADS by subscribing to Cathy's monthly newsletter. Your e-mail will be kept confidential, and you can unsubscribe at any time.)

My review: Although this is the sixth book in the Miller's Creek series, it is also a stand-alone novel. There is no feeling of "inside information" that you would know from the previous five, and no being lost in discussions of previous events.

This is an emotional yet uplifting story of two single parents who are able to help each other through the current trials in their journey to raise their daughters. It is also the story of a prodigal--someone who has lost her faith in God and is being led back to Him through the people who surround her on a daily basis.

There are a variety of issues involved in the plot of this story: divorce, mental religious abuse, childhood illness, eating disorders, dysfunctional families, to name a few. They are all handled in a realistic yet loving way by the author.

All of the characters are easy to relate to throughout the story, even though each of them have moments where you may not always LIKE them. :)
I hope that we will get further looks into their lives in the future!

X Is For Diane Xarissa

 photo X_zpsewqq98zd.jpg

photo xarissacoversbottom_zpsewiipp79.png Diana Xarissa writes the Isle of Man Cozy Mystery series which started in 2014 and is set on the Isle of Man. It features Aunt Bessie, a character who first appeared in the Isle of Man Romance Island Inheritance. In that novel, she had just passed away, so the cozy mysteries are set about fifteen years before the romance novels (circa 1998). Bessie's lived her entire adult life in a small cottage on Laxey Beach in the Isle of Man. Until now, murder was just something that happened in her favorite fiction.

As D. X. Dunn, Diana writes action/fantasy/adventure stories aimed at "middle grade" readers (ages 6 to 12). Collectively these are the Distania Chronicles and they tell the story of two ten-year-old best friends who accidentally discover another world complete with magic, dragons, unicorns and wizards. The friends struggle to figure out who they can trust as they meet fighting princes, an elderly king and a slew of magical creatures they didn't even think existed.

As Diana X. Dunn, Diana writes the F6 series of novels, mystery/thrillers set in the not-too-distant future. F6 was adopted by an international multi-governmental agency that doesn't officially exist. Throughout her childhood she was simply identified as F6, the sixth female baby adopted into the program. Now she changes identities as often as other women change their shoes, moving through the world completing top-secret missions and keeping her distance. She's just trying to do her job. Somewhere out there is one man who wants to stop her.

W Is For Heather Webber

 photo W_zpsgztvvooy.jpg

photo HeatherBlakeWebber2014_zpso72kgaq8.jpg Heather Webber, aka Heather Blake, is the author of more than twenty novels, including the popular best-selling romantic mystery series featuring Lucy Valentine, the humorous Nina Quinn landscaping mysteries, and the best-selling Darcy Merriweather Wishcraft mysteries and the brand-new Potion Shop mysteries featuring Carly Hartwell. Heather loves to read, watch reality TV (especially cooking competition shows), drink too much coffee, crochet, bake (mostly cookies), and occasionally leave the house to travel to the beautiful mountains in the northeast. She grew up in a suburb of Boston, but currently lives in the Cincinnati area with her family.

The Nina Quinn series began in 2004, and takes place in Ohio. Nina owns a landscaping firm called "Taken By Surprise" which specializes in surprise garden makeovers that are completed in one day. She is divorced and lives with her stepson Riley.

The Lucy Valentine series began in 2010. Lucy has taken over her parents' matchmaking service in Boston. She comes from a long line of psychics who can see auras and make a match. However, Lucy was caught in an electrical surge when she was younger, so her only ability is to find missing objects.

The Wishcraft series began in 2012, and features Darcy Merriweather. It takes place in Enchanted Village, which is part of Salem Massachusetts. Darcy and her sister Harper are surprised to learn, from their Aunt Ve, that they are Wishcrafters (witches who can grant people's wishes with a simple spell). They move to Enchanted Village to hone their skills and solve murders.

Heather's newest series is the Potion Shop series, which began in 2013 and is set in Hitching Post, Alabama, the wedding capital of the South. Carly Hartwell is a white magic witch, a healer who uses her ability as an empath (and some very special drops) to make a variety of potions. She is also something of a relationship expert, as well as an amateur sleuth.

Editor: Bobbie Metevier
Published by Permuted Press May 19, 2015

About VOICES:
Sometimes the ghosts from your past…are real.

Moira Flynn is arrested for attacking a door-to-door solicitor with a knife. She claims a voice told her the man was intent on assaulting her. The trouble is, she was the only one that heard that voice. Moira strikes a plea bargain and is sent to a psychiatric hospital for voluntary treatment. Dr. Richard Cassano is hesitant to treat her as schizophrenic, as she does not show the standard symptoms. As their sessions progress, Moira confesses there are two voices—and they aren’t voices in her head, but the voices of ghosts. Are they imaginary? Or are they actual spirits, attached to her for reasons of their own? As Moira’s doctor uncovers more of her past, he begins to realize that her ghosts are real. And one of them is determined to drag Moira into the afterlife with him.

Excerpt from VOICES:
Moira choked down a congealed glob of oatmeal. Bland, like all the food here. She picked up her plastic knife and smeared margarine onto a piece of dry toast. Patients were only given plastic utensils. She washed the toast down with a gulp of tepid decaf coffee and sat back, miserable. “I hate this place, I want out.”
“At least your session was cancelled for tomorrow,” Jack said. “One less thing I’ll have to sit through.”
Dr. Cassano didn’t say why, either, Moira worried. He seemed nervous about cancelling too.
“We’ll get out.”
“Not we, Jack, me. I want out.” She stared mournfully at the food on her tray. “I don’t care what happens to you.”
“That’s not nice,” Isabella said.
“I don’t care what happens to you, either.”
“You’re mean!” She retreated to the corner of the room to pout.
“Don’t be mean, Moira,” Jack reprimanded. “Isabella’s just a child.”
She let out a sound of frustration. They both knew Jack didn’t care the slightest about Isabella. “I wonder why Dr. Cassano cancelled it.”
“Why do you care?”
Moira turned away pointedly and undid her braid, hoping to dissuade the headache coming on.
“Don’t ignore me,” Jack said, his voice hardening. “I didn’t like the way he looked at you this morning.” He grabbed her arm.” I don’t like the way you look at him either. I see the way you look at him.”
She shook him off. “You’re paranoid, Jack.”
“You know what I’m talking about, don’t play dumb.” He sat back, his eyes watchful. “Don’t trust him, Moira. Who knows what he’s planning?”
“If you do anything, Jack, I mean anything. They’ll lock the door and throw away the key.” She moved away from his presence. “And don’t think they wouldn’t medicate me with a dozen different pills, all guaranteed to make you go away forever.”
“You know pills won’t make me go away, Moira,” Jack bit out. “They might make you sleep, but they won’t make me go away.”
Silence filled the room. Moira picked up her brush and started brushing out her hair.
“It would be his word against yours, if he ever tried anything.”
“Just drop it, Jack,” Moira said.
Jack narrowed his eyes. “He’d medicate you so you’d never remember it, either.”
She shook her head in disgust.
“Maybe you could bust out of here!” Isabella jumped up. “I’ll bet you could open the window with that knife.” She ran over to the window and pushed against it.
“It’s completely sealed, Isabella.” Moira watched her, feeling helpless to the noise from her efforts. “Stop banging on it! You’re going to get me into trouble.”
“You could cut through the walls!”
“Hello? Plastic knife, it can’t cut anything.”
“It can’t?” Jack asked. “Have you tried?”
She caught his look and quickly turned her attention to Isabella, who was still thumping on the window. “I’m not breaking out of here, Isabella. Do you want me to go to jail?”
“But what if they keep you in here forever?” Isabella asked.
“They’re not going to.”
“But what if they do?” Isabella jumped up and down. “What if they keep you here until you’re old and grey and all your teeth fall out?”
“It would be awful to be stuck here forever,” Jack said quietly. “Wouldn’t it, Moira? Just awful.”
“They’re not going to keep me here forever!” Moira said. “Isabella, stop it!”
The door opened. “Problem?” the nurse asked.
She glanced over at Jack. A slice of a smile crept across his lips. “No. No problem. Just…thinking aloud.”
“Finish up your breakfast, then,” she said briskly. She shut the door again.
Moira picked up her carton of juice and took a sip.
Jack pushed her hand upwards, sloshing juice into Moira’s face and down her T-shirt.
Whoops!” Isabella giggled.
“Asshole,” she muttered. She went into the bathroom with Jack trailing her. Their eyes connected in the mirror.
“Looks like you’ll need another shower,” he murmured.
She pressed her mouth in a straight line and turned her back to him.

T Is For Gayle Trent

 photo T_zpsceznnwrb.jpg

photo 51cTCr13ldL._UX250__zpskpfnybyi.jpg Gayle Trent (and pseudonym Amanda Lee) writes the Daphne Martin Cake Decorating series and the Embroidery Mystery series. The cake decorating series features a heroine who is starting her life over in Southwest Virginia after a nasty divorce. The Embroidery Mystery series features a heroine who recently moved to the Oregon coast to open an embroidery specialty shop.

The cake decorating series features a heroine who is starting her life over in Southwest Virginia after a nasty divorce. The heroine, Daphne, has returned to her hometown of Brea Ridge to open a cake baking and decorating business and is wrestling with the question of whether or not one can go home again. She enjoys spending time with her sister, nephew, and niece, but she and her mother have a complicated relationship that isn't always pleasant. Daphne has also reconnected with her high school sweetheart and is pursuing a rekindled romance while desperately trying to put her past behind her. Kerry Vincent, Hall of Fame Sugar Artist, Oklahoma State Sugar Art Show Director, and Television Personality says the series is "a must read for cake bakers and anyone who has ever spent creative time in the kitchen!"

Gayle Trent lives in Virginia with her family, which includes her own "Angus" who is not an Irish wolfhound but a Great Pyrenees who provides plenty of inspiration for the character of Mr. O'Ruff.
