BOOK INFORMATION
Genre: Christian woman, personal growth, self-help
Paperback: 224 pages

  • Publisher: Revell (February 4, 2020)
  • Language: English
  • ISBN-10: 0800735889
  • ISBN-13: 978-0800735883
  • Synopsis:
  • A single "no" from someone close to us can crush our dreams. You can't . . . You'll never . . . You're kidding yourself . . . In contrast, a single "yes" can sustain our dreams despite the setbacks we're sure to encounter. Yes, you can! Yes, I'm here for you!

  • With passion and contagious enthusiasm, Angelia White shows you how to surround yourself with Yes Sisters--women who will remind you that you are worthy, that God loves you completely, and that you can accomplish even your wildest dreams. Her engaging personal stories, as well as those from other prominent women, will show you how to

  • - find and cultivate Yes Sister relationships
  • - leverage their power
  • - and be a Yes Sister for someone else

  • She also helps you understand, forgive, and sometimes distance yourself from negative people who dampen your joy and strip you of your motivation.

  • You don't have to go it alone, and you don't have to drag the naysayers along behind you. Start finding your Yes Sisters today!

13887697Review: While I enjoyed reading this book, its subject is one with which I always feel something of a disconnect. I have never had really close female friends, so the whole idea of a group of Yes Sisters is totally foreign to me. I did enjoy reading the story of Angelia turning her dream into reality and also getting to read about certain events from the perspective of the "Yes Sister" who was involved in it with her. I can see this book being used in a women's ministry to encourage us to support one another in every area of life.

"A handy and valuable guide for parents who face the ultimate decision to have their child undergo a surgery, this book unravels the fear, answers the questions and makes it understandable and reassuring. It is much needed in the field and its joyful illustrations make it easy to follow and comprehend." -- Donna Geffner, Ph.D., Ed.D (Hon.), CCC-SP/A, Past president of the American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA)

"When reading the book, you feel as if Dr. Laurie is right in front of you and leading you through the whole process. This book provides a useful, simple and straight forward approach for parents and children to deal with the anxiety that precedes any surgery." -- Zev Ash, M.D., F.A.A.P. (pediatrician)

"As owners and directors of a nursery school and summer camp for the past 27 years, we are often asked how to prepare a child for a medical procedure. This book is an excellent roadmap for parents on preparing not only your child, but also yourself, for a scary and often intimidating experience." Adam & Amy Langbart, owners of /Merrick Woods Country Day School and Camp, Merrick, NY

"The use of actual possible scripts to use with your child to help explain procedures and ease a child’s anxiety, well organized helpful to-do lists and timelines serve to make this a required read and practical guide for parents or any caregiver with a child about to undergo a tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy." Steven H. Blaustein Ph.D, CCC, BCS-CL, Speech-Language Pathologist, Board Certified Specialist - Child Language

"This book spells out in clear and concise language what parents need to know and how to prepare children for the surgery. Suggestions on how to talk to children in developmentally appropriate language will be especially helpful to parents. I enthusiastically recommend this book to parents of children facing this medical procedure." David A. Crenshaw, Ph.D., ABPP, Board Certified Clinical Psychologist, Author, Clinical Director of the Children's Home of Poughkeepsie

Review: This book gives parents a great deal of medical information, as well as ideas on how to explain the subject to young children. It is not a book for the children themselves, although it has wonderful illustrations to share with the child--it even offers some direct quotes to use to begin conversations about different parts of the procedure. My favorite resource is the list of suggested items to have on hand at home after the surgery to make recovery easier on everyone. There is also a list of children's books about the subject.

Review: I was very impressed by the positive attitude of the author throughout this book. She reminds the reader that suffering is a part of our human experience, but we don't have to let it break us. She provides anecdotes from her own life, as well as talking about the suffering of such Biblical figures as Noah and Moses, to show how you can grow closer to God during your times of suffering.

The author has a very unique writing style which makes the reader feel this book is written just for them. I will definitely be on the lookout for more from her in the future.

BLOG TOUR: 50 Ways To Get Your Way by Juliet Huck

50-Ways-To-Get-Your-Way-banner-2
BOOK INFORMATION
Genre: Motivational Nonfiction
  • Perfect Paperback
  • Publisher: The Huck Group (September 1, 2018)
  • ISBN-10: 098991951X
  • ISBN-13: 978-0989919517

50-Ways-To-Get-Your-Way

Synopsis: 50 Ways to Get Your Way by Juliet Huck Promotes the Art of Persuading Others Using the Simple Power of Commonsense Values

In 50 WAYS TO GET YOUR WAY, Juliet Huck shares the lessons she learned while growing up on her family’s farm in rural Ohio—values such as being grateful, nurturing relationships, and listening intently, which she used to build a successful career as a persuasion strategist working with corporate clients and on high-profile legal cases. Huck teaches readers how to be persuasive in a manner that is honorable and respectful while making genuine human connections.
The tools Huck shares in 50 WAYS TO GET YOUR WAY are familiar, but the author notes that many of these values are missing in the current social climate. Using beautiful images (many photographed by the author) and conversational prose, Huck encourages readers to commit to a practice of awareness—of self and others—and guides them through the dance of building relationships that will help them achieve their goals. While all of the pearls of wisdom presented in 50 WAYS TO GET YOUR WAY are essential ingredients for developing into a solid human being, several offer the building blocks for becoming an exceptional person who gets what he or she wants. Being empathetic by learning what other people find meaningful, paying attention to the effect that one’s tone can have on others, telling a compelling story, letting go of expectations to minimize disappointment, and understanding the importance of clarity when asking for assistance or sharing plans are just a few of the gems that Huck examines in her book.
Huck acknowledges that the principles outlined in 50 WAYS TO GET YOUR WAY are not “rocket science”; however, she believes they are timely. “Observing the current environment, I could not sit back and be silent about how we are treating each other—especially when we need something from someone else. I felt instead of fighting with others, it is time to remind us of the beautiful things that can connect us,” Huck said.
50 WAYS TO GET YOUR WAY was written with the intention of helping people fulfill their personal and professional needs by mastering the art of making genuine connections.

Review: When I was presented with the opportunity to read and review this book, I was quick to accept, thanks to the phrase "growing up on her family’s farm in rural Ohio." I grew up in rural Ohio myself, and many of my relatives are farmers. I had a strong feeling this book would resonate with me, and I was right.

This little book of "common sense philosophy" is easy to read, and provides a great deal of humor. The information provided is done in a relatable way, filled with the author's personality.

This would make a great gift for any high school or college graduate about to embark on finding their way in the world.

The author writes from her own experiences and does so with understanding, love, and knowledge. The index is arranged so that the reader can easily find a devotional about a specific topic or immediate need.

Synopsis: In 52 personal, vulnerable letters, writer Andi Cumbo-Floyd shares her personal experiences of the writing journey, offers her perspective on the writing life, and shares encouragement to help writers through the hard and the joyous days of being a writer. The letters cover everything from what it feels like to sign a book contract to the times writing draws out emotion we didn't realize to the need for space in our daily lives. The letters are intimate and honest, each written with love for the writers Cumbo-Floyd holds dear.

Review:

An easy to read book of short letters to writers. The letters are called "love letters" as they are full of encouraging words to get writers through those times when life and/or your writing are getting you down.

There is some advice, such as how to build your "platform," but it's more about growing in self-awareness. The author asks questions that help you dig deep, think about your writing, and most importantly, not to compare yourself to other writers.

This is a resource I will pull out and read over and over again to keep myself motivated. Many thanks to the author for writing such an important book!

GUEST POST

Loving on the Writers
by Andi Cumbo-Floyd

So much of the writing about writing out there comes in the form of tips or rules, should or don’ts.  I’m enough of a rebel that I don’t like that for myself as a writer, and often, as an editor and writing coach, I hear the way those rules and lists hinder writers, shutting down their creativity and playfulness and making them feel like things have to be “right” instead of they have to be, well, whatever they have to be.

I’ve found that the writers I most relate to, the writing books that have spoken the most to me, have come from the heart and the experiences of the people who lived them.  Anne Lamott, Annie Dillard, Gayle Brandeis, Stephen King, Laraine Herring – these folks have bared their word-ridden souls in their books on writing, and through their vulnerability, I have been heartened and encouraged even in the hardest days of the writing life.

That’s what I hope – in some small way – Love Letters To Writers does for the wordsmiths who read it. I hope they are encouraged and challenged, and I hope they know that I have told them the truth of my experience as a writer in this world.  The book does include a big of practical suggestions – never rules – that I have drawn from my own experience of writing, marketing, and publishing, but my intention was always to leave space for those experiences which aren’t like my own.  After all, there aren’t that many writers – the great Wendell Berry aside – who also farm. (Oh, the goat metaphors I could include here.)

Writing is not always easy, and so I hope this book lifts other writers a little on the hard days and gently pushes them to keep going when the hard feels too heavy.  I hope I have passed along the gift that so many other writers have given me – a belief in myself, a nudge to just take it one word at a time, and the promise that I am not alone in this journey.
