Rose continues to deliver babies and listen to secrets, finally figuring out one criminal – only to be threatened by the murderer, with three lives at stake. Can she rescue herself, a baby, and her elderly midwifery teacher in time?

Review: This is the second book in the historical Quaker Midwife cozy mystery series. Once again, we are transported to the 1800s in Amesbury, Massachusetts and the life of Rose Carroll.  Shortly after Rose learns that an unmarried mill girl, Hannah, is pregnant, Hannah is shot and killed in the middle of a crowd during Independence Day fireworks. Rose is determined to find who killed her, and why....and even more so after another Quaker (and former slave) is arrested for the crime.

Not only do we get to watch Rose do her best to solve the murder, we also get a glimpse into her work as a midwife with a variety of clients. Once again, the poet John Greenleaf Whittier plays a role as a supporting character.

There are many twists and turns to this story as Rose tries to put all the pieces of the puzzle in their proper places. The final reveal wasn't a total surprise for me, but it took me a great deal of the book before I settled on a suspect.

Review: I believe this is the first historical cozy I have read, but it definitely won't be the last. Rose, a Quaker midwife, is an easily likable character. She cares about her family, her patients, and the town of Amesbury, Massachusetts. So, when a fire threatens everyone's livelihood and takes lives, and then there are other murders, she feels compelled to find out who is behind them. Her friendship with the poet John Greenleaf Whittier gives her someone she can trust for advice and encouragement.

I truly enjoyed learning more about the Quaker community through this story, as well as reading about Rose's work as a midwife. The author takes us into Rose's life, making us feel as though we are right there with her in every situation. The mystery is well-developed and leaves the reader guessing right to the end.

I hope this series will continue for a VERY long time!
