The #1 New

life’s most complicated relationships.
When their mother passed away, Evie Ross and
her sister were each given a stack of letters, one to be opened every year on
their birthday; letters their free-spirited mother hoped would inspire and
guide them through adulthood. But although Evie has made a successful career,
her desire for the stability and security she never had from her parents has
meant she’s never experienced the best life has to offer. But the discovery of
more letters hidden in a safe-deposit box points to secrets her mother held
close, and possibly a new way for Evie to think about her family, her heart and
her dreams.

REVIEW
I have gone back and forth on my thoughts about Harlequin books over the years, but this one put me back in the fan category again.
Evie Ross and her sister Suda Kaye could not be more different. Suda Kaye is a free spirit who traveled the world before returning to her family to settle down with the love of her life, who still is spontaneous and fun-loving. Evie has always been the responsible one, especially with her military father constantly deployed to one place or another, and her mother taking off time and again to follow her dreams. Evie is determined that her adult life will be stable and secure and that she will never again let herself be hurt by loving someone.
When Suda Kaye secretly arranges to throw Milo Chivas, Evie's lifelong crush, into her life, Evie's world is turned upside down. Will she continue to hold on to her attitude of not needing anyone else in her life, or will she be able to compromise and find true love at last?
I enjoyed the characters in this story, particularly Suda, Evie, and Milo. Evie, being half Native American and half European American, never really feels that she belongs fully to either world. Suda, who has a different father than Evie (and doesn't know who he is), always feels on the outside of the family. Milo is a full-blooded Navajo who faces family criticism for his relationship with Evie but refuses to back down.
I was disappointed that the "letters in the safety deposit box" twist didn't come until nearly the end of the book and that it all seemed rushed and shortened. It does set up the third and final book of the trilogy, however.
I was also not a fan of the multiple explicit sex scenes throughout the book and found myself skipping over them.
