Synopsis: Kenni Lowry likes to think the zero crime rate in Cottonwood, Kentucky is due to her being sheriff, but she quickly discovers the ghost of her grandfather, the town’s previous sheriff, has been scaring off any would-be criminals since she was elected. When the town’s most beloved doctor is found murdered on the very same day as a jewelry store robbery, and a mysterious symbol ties the crime scenes together, Kenni must satisfy her hankerin’ for justice by nabbing the culprits.

With the help of her Poppa, a lone deputy, and an annoyingly cute, too-big-for-his-britches State Reserve officer, Kenni must solve both cases and prove to the whole town, and herself, that she’s worth her salt before time runs out.
Review: Another new series from Tonya, and it looks like it is going to be as great as all the rest! Once again, we are introduced to small-town Kentucky, where everyone knows everyone, and where gossip and busy bodies run rampant.

Sheriff Kenni Lowry is a genuinely likable character, as is the ghost of her Poppa. And Finn, the State Reserve officer, is going to make a perfect romantic interest for Kenni. There are also more than a few supporting characters I look forward to getting to know better through the course of the series.

I was totally surprised by the identity of the killer once it was revealed, but the reveal helped to pull all the clues together so that by the time I was finished reading I fully understood who, how and why,

SUMMER READING CHALLENGE: Everybody Rise by Stephanie Clifford #bestsummerever #src2016

Synopsis: It's 2006 in the Manhattan of the young and glamorous. Money and class are colliding in a city that is about to go over a financial precipice and take much of the country with it. At 26, bright, funny and socially anxious Evelyn Beegan is determined to carve her own path in life and free herself from the influence of her social-climbing mother, who propelled her through prep school and onto the Upper East Side. Evelyn has long felt like an outsider to her privileged peers, but when she gets a job at a social network aimed at the elite, she's forced to embrace them.

Recruiting new members for the site, Evelyn steps into a promised land of Adirondack camps, Newport cottages and Southampton clubs thick with socialites and Wall Streeters. Despite herself, Evelyn finds the lure of belonging intoxicating and starts trying to pass as old money herself. When her father, a crusading class-action lawyer, is indicted for bribery, Evelyn must contend with her own family's downfall as she keeps up appearances in her new life, grasping with increasing desperation as the ground underneath her begins to give way.

Bracing, hilarious and often poignant, Stephanie Clifford's debut offers a thoroughly modern take on classic American themes - money, ambition, family, friendship - and on the universal longing to fit in.

Review: No matter how hard I tried, I just couldn't get enthusiastic about this book. The plot just seemed to crawl at a snail's pace, so that I kept flipping pages to see if I was ever going to get close to some real action (spoiler alert: the answer, at least for me, was no). I got tired of reading about the architecture of this or that character's house, the furnishings, the clothing they were all wearing, etc. Yes, I get that the main character is an avid social climber who obviously cares about all these things...but I, as a reader, am NOT.

The ending was way too predictable...after falling from grace, Evelyn learns her lesson and realizes what things REALLY matter in life. Unfortunately, by that point, Evelyn and her life no longer mattered to me in any way, shape or form.

While it is obvious from other reviews of this book that it does appeal to some readers, I am not among them, and can't bring myself to recommend it to anyone.

About the author

My official bio: As a New York Times reporter, Loeb-award winning journalist Stephanie Clifford covered courts, business and media. Everybody Rise, her first book, was a New York Times bestseller, with movie rights optioned by Fox 2000. A magna cum laude graduate of Harvard, she grew up in Seattle and lives in Brooklyn.
My notes on my bio: It doesn't rain that much In Seattle. In fact, it rarely rains hard enough that an umbrella is required, hence the city's happy embrace of rain gear for all occasions. (Raincoats + formal dresses = totally acceptable.) I spent most of my time at Harvard at the paper, living on late-night Doritos from the vending machine. Some of my favorite Times stories are here, and here's oneand here's another of my favorite Inc. stories (largely because Inc. let me go to Turkey and China for them). Brooklyn is grand and there are pockets where it's not that hip; I'm lucky enough to live in one of those, and near a park, to boot. I live with my husband, 2-year-old son, and our cats, Mac and Mabe.

Synopsis: The kettle’s about to boil over . . .

The quaint coastal town of South Cove, California, is all abuzz about the opening of a new specialty shop, Tea Hee. But as Coffee, Books, and More owner Jill Gardner is about to find out, there’s nothing cozy about murder . . .

Shop owner Kathi Corbin says she came to South Cove to get away from her estranged family. But is she telling the truth? And did a sinister someone from her past follow her to South Cove? When a woman claiming to be Kathi’s sister starts making
waves and a dead body is found in a local motel, Jill must step in to clear Kathi’s name—without getting herself in hot water.

Includes an excerpt from A STORY TO KILL, Lynn Cahoon’s BRAND NEW series.

Review: I'm a big fan of this series, and this seventh book is no exception. All the main characters are back, and in fine form. They seem to be growing with each book, their personalities becoming more well defined. We also get a chance to meet some new folks--but will they be sticking around?

As usual, Jill and Aunt Jackie have some sharply biting, witty exchanges, which add to my enjoyment of the stories. Jill and Greg's relationship is continuing to evolve, and I was very satisfied by the direction it was headed by the end of the book.

The mystery is fast-paced and fabulous! There are secrets, lies, murder, and so much more.  The reveal of the murderer was a real surprise after plenty of twists and turns. Can't wait to see what will happen next time!

  • Language: English
  • ISBN-10: 194253521X
  • ISBN-13: 978-1942535218

Synopsis:Angels do indeed come in fur suits.

It's love at first sight...for both of them. An abandoned yet tenacious pup with one blue eye and one brown eye beats the odds and is enlisted as one woman's WINGDOG. It's a role he takes seriously, but he knows that his human needs more than just another set of eyes and ears. He must show her how to laugh and how to love again. His loyalty knows no bounds, and he takes his duties seriously riding shotgun as the pair travel life's highway.

A dog may be man's best friend, but the truth is...A WINGDOG is truly a woman's gift.

For readers who enjoy contemporary canine classics such as MARLEY & ME, THE ART OF RACING IN THE RAIN, and A DOG'S PURPOSE, Janelle Jalbert's 'Magical Mutt Memoir' combines the best of these storytelling traditions. Told as a memoir - adhering to how events unfolded - one woman seeks establish a new life after moving across the country from California to North Carolina.

Her chance at a new normal arrives in the form of Goose, a pup that melts not only her heart but also the hearts of everyone that he meets. As they travel coast-to-coast and places in between, the bond that the two share proves that love and loyalty can transcend even the greatest of obstacles.

WINGDOG: SOUL PUP is a heart-warming, emotional - and oftentimes comical - tale of how one pup becomes the consummate WINGDOG only to transform into the ultimate Soul Pup.

Review: Goose is a dog who will steal your heart. His adventures with Janelle are full of laughter--their travels around the country make his name, taken from TOP GUN, simply perfect for him.

I loved that Janelle shares what she believes Goose was thinking/trying to tell her. It was so believable, and added a whole other layer to the story.

Animal lovers will easily relate to how this relationship changed Janelle's life and helped her to recover from traumatic events in her life.

This book is a true keeper, and one I will read time and again.

REVIEW AND GIVEAWAY: My Mother's Quilts by Ramona Richards

 photo 25943168_zpsowahs6b3.jpg
BOOK INFORMATION
Genre: Christian Devotional
  • Hardcover: 240 pages
  • Publisher: Worthy Inspired (March 8, 2016)
  • Language: English
  • ISBN-10: 1617956120
  • ISBN-13: 978-1617956126

Synopsis: Inspired by thirty family heirloom quilts, each devotion in My Mother’s Quilts shares the enduring legacy of faith, family, and tradition in our lives. Rich, personal, sometimes heartbreaking, often funny, readers will find their own lives reflected in the author’s memories and the lessons and encouragements drawn from the quilters whose legacy lives on in their work. Woven through it all is the message of God’s grace and faithfulness, as strong as the bonds of the generations and as comforting as the oldest and softest quilt that your grandmother ever sewed. Beautiful, four-color photos of each quilt are included.

Review: As you can see below, the pictures in this book are amazing. That alone would have been enough reason for me to enjoy it...just to flip through and look at all the wonderful pictures.

But this little book is so much more than just the pictures. Each devotional tells the story of an individual quilt, and includes a prayer starter of a sentence or two, as well as a Bible verse. I read through the entire book in one sitting, but will also go back and use it as a daily devotional guide.

My grandmother was a quilter, and I have a couple of her quilts in my home, so that makes this book even more special to me. It will have a place of honor on our coffee table, where it will no doubt get picked up often and looked at by visitors.

Bring Your Own Baker (Death By Cupcake #2) by D.E. Haggerty

BOOK INFORMATION
  • Series: Death by Cupcake
  • Paperback: 144 pages
  • Publisher: CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform (June 19, 2016)
  • Language: English
  • ISBN-10: 1533635781
  • ISBN-13: 978-1533635785

 photo add-to-goodreads-button_zpsc7b3c634.png

Synopsis:Anna just wants to earn enough money on the side to buy into the bakery, Callie’s Cakes, where she works together with her best nerd pal Callie. The last thing she expects to see when she walks into Arthur’s apartment to do some moonlighting is a blood bath. Callie’s ready to jump into the investigation into Arthur’s murder, and she’s bringing another bakery worker, Kristie, into their hijinks whether Kristie wants to or not. But things aren’t as they seem. There are gang affiliations, illegal gambling dens, and ladies of the night to wade through. Will Anna and Callie discover who murdered Arthur or will Callie’s detective boyfriend Ben and Anna’s self-appointed protector put a stop to such aspirations?

Come join us at Callie’s Cakes, where murder investigations are on the menu, but make sure to bring your own baker because Anna’s a bit preoccupied at the moment.

Warning: This is NOT your mom’s cozy mystery. Bring Your Own Baker may be a ‘clean’ read, but if gangs, illegal gambling, and pimps make you turn your nose up at your e-reader, you might want to skip this one. Although you’ll be missing some sizzling chemistry between Anna and her protector. Not to mention a whole bunch of witty dialogue.

Review: I loved this book--I think I preferred it more than the first one! Anna is such a fascinating character. She has a unique, wonderful personality, and I enjoyed reading more about her.

Logan is another great character, and his interactions with Anna had me actually laughing out loud. As the synopsis states, they have a lot of witty dialogue, and LOTS of chemistry!

Also glad we get to know more about Kristie in this book. Looking forward to reading more about her, and hope she gets her own adventure (although, honestly, I'd be happy with more stories about Anna!)

In the first book, the chapter titles were all quotes about sweets. In this book, the titles form a recipe--a recipe for creating and solving a mystery--and they are perfect.

This book is very well written, with just the right amounts of mystery, laughs and romance. I didn't figure out the entire mystery until the big reveal, although I had a few ideas along the way that did turn out to be at least partially correct.

If you enjoy a cozy mystery full of quirky characters, lots of wit and snark, some HOT males, and a murder to solve, then be sure to read this book!

EXCERPT

I grasp the weapon in my hand and throw it with all my might at him. The weapon makes a ‘tee hee’ sound as it hits his stomach.
“Did you just throw a Pillsbury dough boy at me?” His voice carries a hint of humor. The Pillsbury dough boy was probably not the best item to grab from the kitchen to use as a weapon. Obviously, I’m totally losing it.
I inch backwards into the kitchen searching for a more appropriate weapon. Dag nab it! The knives are way over on the other side. I have no choice. Without taking my eyes of the man, I grab a perfectly formed and probably fricking delicious muffin from the tin and throw it at the intruder. Apparently, my fast ball needs some work as he just catches the muffin as if I merely lobbed it in his direction. He smiles and, not bothering with the paper liner, takes a huge bite.
“Mmmm…,” he groans around a mouthful. “This is really good.”
“Seriously?” I throw my arms in the air before planting my hands on my hips. “If you want my muffins, just come to the bakery. You don’t have to break in.” Uh oh, I nearly forgot that he broke in. I start backing up again, getting ever closer to those knives.
The man’s eyes narrow as he notices me shuffling my way towards the knives. He stalks me and, when he’s only an arm’s length away, reaches around me and grabs the knife block. He keeps his eyes steady on me as he places the block on top of the refrigerator. Somewhere I can only reach if I get out my step ladder.
“Who are you? And what are you doing here?” I may be terrified and my voice my stutter a bit, but I’m not backing down. Not. One. Bit.
“You’re a feisty little thing, aren’t you?”
“Who you calling little?” Apparently, I have no regard for my safety at all as I’m now goading an intruder.
The man chuckles. His smile shows a perfect set of teeth. Huh, not exactly what I expected from Mr. Piercings and Tattoos. “For a pink-haired pixie, you sure aren’t afraid, are you?”

About the author

I grew up reading everything I could get my hands on from my mom's Harlequin romances to Nancy Drew to Little Women. When I wasn't flipping pages in a library book, I was penning horrendous poems, writing songs no one should ever sing, or drafting stories which have thankfully been destroyed. College and a stint in the U.S. Army came along, robbing me of free time to write and read, although I did manage every once in a while to sneak a book into my rucksack between rolled up socks, MRIs, t-shirts, and cold weather gear. A few years into my legal career, I was exhausted, fed up, and just plain done. I quit my job and sat down to write a manuscript, which I promptly hid in the attic after returning to the law. Another job change, this time from lawyer to B&B owner and I was again fed up and ready to scream I quit, which is incredibly difficult when you own the business. Thus, I shut the B&B during the week and in the off-season and started writing. Several books later I find myself in Istanbul writing full-time.
